7 Last Poems: The 7 Days of Holy Week

Thank you to everyone who joined us for 7 Last Poems: The 7 Days of Holy Week at the historic Ruth Williams Opera House! In collaboration with Kairos of San Francisco, New College Berkeley, and Lyrical Opposition, this special Lenten event offered a powerful blend of poetry, music, and spiritual reflection. We’re grateful to the incredible artists—The 7 Last Poets, Bay Worship Collective, and Hope Briggs—for sharing their gifts so bravely and beautifully. Your presence and support made this a memorable gathering. Stay connected, support the artists, and look out for the next 7 Last Poems experience!

HOPE BRIGGS

HOPE BRIGGS, a native of New Jersey, drew a rave review from Opera News for her San Francisco Opera debut as the Duchess of Parma in Busoni’s Doktor Faust “… Hope Briggs was stellar, delivering one of the evening’s highlights with her lusciously intoned, lovelorn aria.”

BRITTANY WILLIAMS

Tuesday: Matthew 23:13-32

I started writing poetry when I was a child, but I didn't know that it was poetry. To me it was just a way to put my thoughts and feelings on paper that happened to rhyme, and the parts that didn't rhyme still had movement and meaning. When I discovered the power of speaking out the poetry I'd written it changed everything.

Now as a spoken word poet, storyteller and writer, I create experiences with words that I hope make people feel the same way I do whenever I share what I've created -

I hope they feel seen, heard and understood.

I facilitate workshops for youth and adults where I teach storytelling and narrative, how to write poetry, spoken word performance and creative expression. I share my work at open mics, conferences, and curated events. If you are interested in learning more about me and what I do send me an email or connect with me on Instagram.

PORSCHE VEU

Wednesday: Mark 14:1-11

Porsche Veu aka The Poetic Activist is an unapologetic author, spoken word poet, speaker, educator, and artist of many talents from Oakland, Ca. With a passion for God, social justice, women & Black empowerment, and mental health, she aims to bridge the gap between faith & social justice, create brave atmospheres for uncomfortable conversations, and inspire others to find freedom in telling their own stories using poetry, motivational speaking, workshops, and music.

Porsche has been invited to speak, perform, and teach in numerous companies and organizations such as TED Talk, Google, Adobe, Apple, YWCA, and Center for Independent Living, as well as a host of colleges, churches, festivals, conferences, and more. She has also featured on many podcasts, panels, and creative projects, including the 2020 CA Census campaign.

After sharing her mental health poem “Caesar: A Poem About Suicide” in 2017, Porsche has evolved into an artist and speaker who heavily encourages vulnerability and helps others fight the shame attached to their trauma that keeps them from healing. Her first, self-published poetry book 2 Kinds of Fire (2019) is a testament to her belief that vulnerability is a superpower. Her ultimate goal is to challenge toxic, societal norms and help people erase shame and tell their story.
